Why this sign?
This is on the back of Pamela's/La Feria in Shadyside. The sign has
remained for many years, but I have no idea what Papa Joe's is.

Papa Joe's was a restaraunt that served burgers, hot dogs and sandwiches (if I remember correctly). It was right next to Prantl's bakery. Next to that, at the corner of Filbert and Walnut, was a bar where I would sell my extras (Pittsburgh Press leftover from my paper route).
I think this project is fantastic (it brings back many memories for a Pittsburgh economic refugee)

In the early 70s, while in college, I worked a summer in a pleasant little restaurant (ok, a nice little joint) that met this same description.
It was in Oakland, on Forbes near or at Craig, and was called Papa Joe's White Hut. It was too small to have more than 3 working there at any one time -- sometimes only 1. It was long ago, but that sign sure looks familiar, and brings back happy memories of a nice boss and coworker, and fun courteous customers. Not to mention, my youth.

Papa Joe's was a little restaurant on Walnut St. Great for munchies. This was 60s-70s when Walnut Street had bars on every corner; Mardi Gras, Gaslight Club, Taylors, Encore, Fox Cafe, Casbah, Pizza Pub. Whole different world there now, back then it was like a small Greenwich Village, music coming out of the taverns and clubs as you walked down the street. People hanging out on the street corners and talking to everyone that walked by. The smell of good smoke coming out of every alleyway. I bartended in the place that Finbarr mentioned above, and for the life of me can't remember the name of it....Maybe Shadyside Tavern.

I have a vague memory that the Squirrel Hill Pamela's (on Forbes near Murray) was _also_ named Papa Joe's before it turned into Pamela's (sometime in the 70s?)
