House of Sauce and Name of the Game

Photographer: Jenifer Lee Baldwin
Date: 1988
Place: Centre Ave. near Neville, Oakland, Pittsburgh
Why this sign?
Name of the Game took over the street during late night with those
giant lightbulbs and all that "Talkin and Drinkin." I think this
sign was similar to the one on the Electric Banana, which wasn't very
far away. I've tried in vain to find a photo of the Electric Banana,
so I hope someday there will be one on this wonderful site.
As I remember it, six dollars at House of Sauce would get you half a
bbq chicken and some Wonder bread. I was fascinated by their
mysterious sign. The weird yellow bricks support the H implying
"house", and the sauce ladle forming the S. The sign and building
(all the blue) had been newly painted that year, prompting me to take
the photo.

I used to walk by these establishments often. My North Oakland apartment was really close. My roommate and I used to joke about the crazy "Name of the Game" sign. Of course we never went in. Was the House of Sauce any good?
